At Living Well Counseling Center in Tinton Falls, NJ, we understand that many people who seek therapy are battling an invisible but powerful inner critic. Whether rooted in past trauma, negative relationships, or perfectionism, self-criticism and shame can be overwhelming. That’s why we offer Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)—a powerful, evidence-based approach that helps individuals develop a more supportive, healing relationship with themselves. Led by licensed professional counselor Lindsey Capelli, LPC, NCC, SAC, our team uses CFT to guide clients toward emotional resilience through self-compassion and mindful awareness.
What is Compassion-Focused Therapy?
Originally developed by British psychologist Dr. Paul Gilbert, Compassion-Focused Therapy integrates neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. Its goal is to help people reduce self-criticism, manage difficult emotions, and promote emotional healing through compassionate thinking. CFT is especially effective for individuals who struggle with: Harsh self-judgment Feelings of shame or inadequacy Anxiety and depression Trauma-related symptoms Difficulty feeling safe or connected in relationships
The Science Behind CFT: Emotion Regulation Systems
CFT is grounded in the understanding that the human brain has three key emotion systems: Threat System – Triggers fear, anger, and shame in response to danger or rejection. Drive System – Motivates us to pursue goals and rewards. Soothing System – Helps us feel calm, safe, and connected to others. For many people, especially those who have experienced trauma or criticism, the threat system becomes overactive. CFT works by strengthening the soothing system—helping you feel emotionally grounded, secure, and more capable of managing life’s challenges.
