Unlocking Healing with Brainspotting at Living Well Counseling Center

At Living Well Counseling Center in Tinton Falls, NJ, our mission is to support clients through transformative, evidence-based therapies. One powerful modality we offer is Brainspotting (BSP)—a focused, neurobiological somatic therapy designed to uncover and process deep-seated trauma and distress.
What is Brainspotting?
Developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting combines insights from EMDR, psychoanalytic, and somatic approaches to access trauma “stored” in the subcortical brain and body. It focuses on finding a "brainspot"—a specific eye position linked to an emotion or somatic holding pattern—and maintaining that gaze while engaging bilateral sound to facilitate processing and release. Unlike traditional talk therapy, BSP works bottom-up, targeting the nervous system’s trauma responses directly to help “unstick” traumatic memories and emotional blocks.
How Does a Brainspotting Session Feel?
You and your therapist identify a presenting concern (anxiety, grief, or trauma). You follow a pointer or your therapist’s finger across your visual field to locate a vantage point that intensifies bodily sensations. Once found, you hold that gaze while noticing physical, emotional, or cognitive shifts. Supporting bilateral sound encourages deeper nervous system regulation. You may experience gentle physiological responses—tingling, emotional release, shifts in tension—as the trauma processes.
Early studies suggest Brainspotting can be as effective as, or faster than, EMDR in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
How Brainspotting Integrates at Living Well As a Certified Brainspotter and trauma specialist, Lindsey Capelli, LPC, NCC, SAC, integrates BSP with modalities like EMDR, CBT, DBT, and Compassion-Focused Therapy to tailor care for clients. Dual attunement: Lindsey expertly guides the visual pointer while staying attuned to your emotional and physical responses. She creates a safe, nurturing space for processing, especially important for trauma and emotional dysregulation.
Who Can Benefit from Brainspotting?
Trauma survivors, including those with PTSD, anxiety, and grief Individuals with somatic symptoms, chronic tension, or internalized emotional blocks Those who find traditional talk therapy too superficial or overwhelming People looking for deeper mind‑body integration and nervous system regulation
What to Expect in Treatment A typical course involves 4–8 sessions, with noticeable relief often emerging within 3–6 sessions. You will be supported through awakening past sensations while building skills for grounding and integration post-session. Lindsey tailors your plan, weaving in CBT, DBT, EMDR or Compassion Focused Therapy as needed.
